Bamboo Necklace, Large, Jade
Silver Jewelry, B.C. Jade, 1 3/4" x 1 3/4", 18" Length
It is a pleasure to walk in a bamboo forest... cool, dark and quiet with a graceful symmetry. The wind plays the leaves, its chosen instrument and brings with it a sense of serenity. In Japan, bamboo represents the spirit of summer. In ancient Chinese culture, giving a gift of bamboo was also giving a friend the gift of good fortune. Bamboo symbolizes the ingredients for a happy life: Happiness, Wealth and Longevity. The reverse side holds a surprise, can you see her? I have walked in a bamboo forest. What I remember most is the cool, dark atmosphere and the sound... the wind was blowing lightly and the 20' bamboo trunks were gently hitting one another, producing a clicking sound which was very smoothing.
I love to design. Wherever I walk, I am always looking for ways to capture the natural world in a piece of jewelry. I owe my talent as an artist to my maternal grandfather, Erland Waastrom, a Swede who immigrated to this country in the early 20th century. My grandfather was a visual artist. He painted versions of old masters in oils and even recreated the Mona Lisa in pastels! He was also a sculptor and worked in various mediums, including metal and wood. One time he carved a tree root, capturing the image of an embracing couple beneath a grape arbor. I believe that I have carried his love of art and creativity forward through my own design work.
