Mixed Metal Jewelry, Here Comes the Sun Earring

Sterling Silver & Bronze, 1 1/4" x 5/8", Hook

For northern peoples, the return of the sun, symbolized in this mixed metal jewelry design with the bronze face, is a life-giving event. In this piece, the ascendant sun is beginning to eclipse the waning winter moon. The river symbolizes the return of spring and the geese overhead--the promise of new life.

Having lived in Alaska for over 40 years, I am very conscious of its seasonal cycles. We move from summer solstice on June 21st and almost 24 hours of sunshine, to the darker days of winter where on December  21st we have just a little over 4 hours of possible daylight. We love to celebrate the return of the sun in mid-December, during winter solstice by either leaving the state for warmer climes or building huge bonfires and sharing them with dear friends. I have done both.

I love to design.  Wherever I walk, I am always looking for ways to capture the natural world in a piece of jewelry.  I owe my talent as an artist to my maternal grandfather, Erland Waastrom, a Swede who immigrated to this country in the early 20th century. My grandfather was a visual artist. He painted versions of old masters in oils and even recreated the Mona Lisa in pastels! He was also a sculptor and worked in various mediums, including metal and wood.  One time he carved a tree root, capturing the image of an embracing couple beneath a grape arbor.  I believe that I have carried his love of art and creativity forward through my design work.

My husband and children have been collecting Judie Gumm jewelry for me for over 14 years. We first learned of this beautiful creative lady when my husband was stationed at Fairbanks, Alaska. I think of all of the creations I’ve gotten or given as gifts this has got to be my favorite set. It’s symbolism is everything. Very simple and yet elegant. Thank you for continuing to create such lovely pieces.

Hi Christine, thanks you for your lovely comments. It has taken me some time to answer because I didn’t know that I could…I have a huge learning curve on the computer! I love what I do.. next year is my 50th anniversary and I am looking forward to creating some pieces just for the celebration. Best, Judie
