When the wild roses bloom you know it's officially spring. They fill our backyards, line our roadways and travel deep into the woods. Their fragrance reminds us what roses should smell like. But they are fleeting, lasting only a week to ten days and then they start their metamorphosis into a rose hip.... but that's another story.  People pick the petals and make jam or a very delicate liquor when combined with vodka. I love to pick the blossoms, being careful to avoid their thorny side, and float them in a shallow bowl of water. They will last a few days this way and their fragrance is a reminder of why we live here.

This design was influenced by a photo of my grandmother taken in her young adulthood. She was wearing a pendant that had the cross-chain and I thought it was beautiful and very feminine and felt it fit with this rose piece. I believe the photo was taken in the mid-1880's.
